Skype Comes To The iPhone (and Blackberries too)

It's taken a while, but the news that many have been waiting for, has finally broken:

It is officially official,  Skype will be launching an iPhone version of its popular VoIP software on Tuesday and a BlackBerry version in May. Skype for the iPhone will be the standard run of the mill Skype application with an interface consistent with the iPhone’s slick UI. As with the desktop version, Skype to Skype calls will be free, while Skype to traditional numbers will incur a nominal fee. The VoIP service will require access to a Wi-Fi network and will not run over a cellular connection. Additionally, the iPhone version of Skype will also support chatting and, thankfully, this feature will be available via a cellular connection.

Playboy's South By Southwest Party Goes Mobile

For the 10th Annual Late Night Bash at SXSW, event sponsor Playboy spiced things up with some 'uncensored' text-to-screen:

“The idea with Mozes’ photo-to-screen technology at this particular event [was] that the photos will be a little more interesting at this event than you might see posted up at a stadium football game,” she said. “We won’t be censoring, so it should be pretty entertaining.”

The short code for the Playboy-sponsored party was C3SXSW. There were two screens for viewing the mobile pictures sent in to Mozes, one large screen in the main room and a smaller plasma screen in the VIP room.

“We wanted to keep the short code simple, because it will be a very late night and the beverages are complimentary, so we wanted to make it as easy as possible for everyone to submit photos,” Ms. Hickey said. “Music and technology are intertwined in today’s industry.

AdMob To Let iPhone Apps Swap Links

TechCrunch has the details on AdMob's effort to allow iPhone App developers to devote part of their inventory to promoting other apps:

With more than 20,000 apps available for the iPhone, standing out from the crowd is becoming harder and harder for app developers. There are only so many slots in the the top apps lists in the iTunes Store. Discovering new apps is becoming a real problem. But what if apps started cross-promoting other apps, just like they do on Facebook?

AdMob, which claims to be the largest mobile ad network on the iPhone covering more than 1,000 apps, will be launching an iPhone App Exchange by the end of this month for any developer who is already part of its ad network. AdMob currently shows ads across 7.2 million iPhones. Developers will be able to volunteer a portion of the ad inventory on their apps to go towards promoting other apps. In return, their apps will be promoted on other apps in the network. Depending on whether monetization or distribution is more important to them, they will be able to adjust the settings on their AdMob account accordingly.

Smartphones: A Mobile Marketer's Dream

Today's New York Times has an important analysis of the usefulness of smart phones such as the iPhone  for marketers. In short, when you use a smart phone, you reveal a lot of information about yourself:

The millions of people who use their cellphones daily to play games, download applications and browse the Web may not realize that they have an unseen companion: advertisers that can track their interests, their habits and even their location.

Privacy advocates are naturally less excited:

“It’s potentially a portable, personal spy,” said Jeff Chester, the executive director of the Center for Digital Democracy, who will appear before Federal Trade Commission staff members this month to brief them on privacy and mobile marketing. He is particularly concerned about data breaches, advertisers’ access to sensitive health or financial information, and a lack of transparency about how advertisers are collecting data. “Users are going to be inclined to say, sure, what’s harmful about a click, not realizing that they’ve consented to give up their information.”

Nevertheless, consumers are likely to give up a little privacy in exchange for targeted offers:

An advertising system could know, for instance, that someone is 27 years old, male, a New England Patriots fan (which NFL.com can track), plays Blackjack, travels frequently between Boston and New York on weekdays (which applications using GPS can track) and uses a 3G iPhone. That would make him attractive to a host of advertisers, like the Delta Shuttle or a Las Vegas hotel, whose ads would appear while the consumer was browsing the Web on his phone.

Must Have iPhone Apps For Ad Men

Ad Age Magazine has a list of the ten top iPhone apps for the ad man on the go. Check the entire list out here. Some of our favorites are below:

WhereTraveler. A great app for any traveler. Find out security wait times at all airports, search for info on your destination like restaurants, shopping and entertainment. And for when things go wrong, phone numbers for every airline and rental car agency. Just tap a screen to call.

XpenseTrkr. Like this one needs an explanation. It even lets you take a picture of the receipt, something I'm thinking our accounting folks will relish me using more in the future.

The iPhone OWNS the mobile web

AppleInsider is up with the results of a stunning report on iPhone usage and the mobile web:

In its first detailed look at web market share for cellphones, a research firm has found that Apple's iPhone represents a staggering 66.61 percent of mobile traffic while its competitors have only just gained a foothold.

Net Applications' February results show the iPhone operating system having managed over nine times the usage of its next smartphone competitor, Windows Mobile, which had just 6.91 percent of the traffic measured across tens of thousands of sites.
